11 Ways Alexa Helps Busy Families

By Tanya Whitford, CPO® on August 1, 2017 No Comments

I didn’t need to get Alexa. But I thought it might be a cool thing to have so I compromised and got the inexpensive Echo Dot to test the waters. What I found was that we use it way more than I ever thought we would and we don’t even take advantage of many of its features. It has helped so much with our daily life. Here are some of the ways we use Alexa every day in a busy family.

  1. Timers and Alarms for kids– I just call out “Alexa- set a timer for 10 minutes” or “Alexa- set an alarm for 7:55am”. When that timer goes off, the kids know exactly what they should do and they love telling Alexa to stop. When I know we have to leave for dance class soon but could very well get distracted, a simple call out to Alexa ensures we remember to leave on time.
  2. Timers for cooking– Boy do I love be able to just call out cooking timers. I can “set a rice timer for 20 minutes” and then “set a beans time for 45 minutes” and she keeps track of both for me. Love it!
  3. Weather Forecast– My kids will say “Alexa- what’s the weather today?” so they know if they should wear shorts because it will be in the 90’s or pants because it will be in the 70’s. In Los Angeles, the weather varies so much you need to check lest you be fooled by the cool temperature in the morning only to find you are sweating bullets by the time school lets out.
  4. Reminders– you can have Alexa remind you to do something specific and she’ll say it. Whether your husband forgot to pick up the kids at early dismissal (it happened) or you want to remember to take the library books in just ask her to remind you. From my phone I can even tell Alexa to remind my husband to “pick up the kids” at 2:00pm and she will say “This is a reminder- “Pick up your kids.” Your spouse may or may not find it amusing when you do this.
  5. Grocery Lists– never thought just being able to call out things to add to the grocery list would make me so happy. Just say “Alex add milk” and milk instantly appears in the app on your phone for when you are at the grocery store.
  6. Spelling– My kids can ask Alexa how to spell something. I love not always having to be the dictionary.
  7. Basic Questions– Now your kids can ask Alexa questions like what is the capital of a New York or when was Alexander Hamilton born. No need to admit you don’t know these answers yourself or grab your phone. If they try asking her where babies come from or if the tooth fairy is real- they will get a funny answer.
  8. Music– We love being able to call out a song and having Alex play it. We have Amazon Prime so we don’t have everything but we do have a good amount of music options. My kids get a kick out of getting Alexa to stop when their dad picks a song.
  9. Lights– We got a few smart plugs and we all love being able to turn lights on and off by just calling it out. It’s great to be able to do it when I am not home and forgot to leave a light on.
  10. Messages- You can leave a voice message for other people with Echos. My kids love to leave and receive message for their friends with Echos. I want to get my parents one so they can enjoy getting messages from the kids too.
  11. Skills– There are hundreds of extra skills you can pick. We have only tried a few so far, but we enjoy playing Jeopardy together. The kids like Magic 8 Ball and Brainy Bee, my husband likes Flatter Me and The Daily Show, I like Save the Food. Nag My Kids is also fun when they don’t want to listen to you when you tell them to brush their teeth- but they will listen to Alexa.

We also got a Google Home. Google definitely has more information and it has a better speaker. We honestly haven’t spent as much time figuring it out. It has many of the same features as Alexa. We are completely covered in the digital assistant category. When we first got Alexa, my daughter commented that we seemed lazy having Alexa doing all these things. I have to disagree. It is freeing. It makes me feel more efficient. I could never go back to having to get on my phone to do simple tasks. Thank you Alexa and OK Google for having our back. I don’t even care if you are always listening to me.

My Smart Watch Made Me Efficient- and Not Efficient

By Tanya Whitford, CPO® on May 25, 2016 No Comments

I’ve had a Samsung Gear Fit for well over a year now and I love it. I am a middle ground tech person- I never wait in line to get anything first- but I am not still using a flip phone. I can keep my phone for the whole 2 years without going crazy for an upgrade. I got a Smart Watch after my second FitBit died. It was the same price so I went for it and it changed my life. Not because I spend all my time playing with my watch now instead of my phone. Quite the opposite in fact. Now at a quick glance of my wrist, I can see if an incoming text, call, or email is important. No phone to find or pull out to see if that call is my kids school or that text is from my sick parent. Now I can be easily assured when I am working that things are OK. I find that I actually pick up my phone less because I already know what is there waiting for a response.

It has also made me inefficient as well. Why? Because I need at least 10,000 steps a day! Before I tried to make as few trips as possible. Do as much at one time as possible. Now I will gladly take 5 trips to and from the car to empty groceries so I can get steps. As soon as the groceries are unloaded, I walk the empty reuseable bags back to the car so I get more steps. All this laundry has to be put away in 3 different rooms? Perfect! That is a lot of back and forth steps. This one things needs to go to the garage? Should I just stick it in the closet until another time? No! I need steps! It really changes your outlook on life when you treat chores as a means to getting your steps in! Shoot, I can make putting away dishes count!

Sometimes a new gadget ends up gathering dust after the initial excitement wears off. And sometimes a new gadget really does change how you do things and you don’t ever want to go back!

Dish Drying Mats Rule!

By Tanya Whitford, CPO® on January 26, 2015 No Comments

Dish Drying MatOver the years, I have used many different dish racks. Inevitably they would get a little grimy or rusty or not hold enough dishes. There was never one I loved- until I got rid of the dish rack all together and got dish drying mats! I’ve been using dish drying mats for over a year and I haven’t missed a dish rack for a minute.

You just lay the dish drying mat on the counter against the wall and start playing reverse Jenga as you line up your dishes to dry. The mats are thick, highly absorbent, and cushion your dishes. I have 2 extra dish mats for the days when there are a lot of dishes. I throw them in the wash when they are dirty. Hang them up if they need to dry. Fold them and tuck them away if I don’t need them. They are so simple, inexpensive, and easy to find. They are awesome! I will never go back to a dish rack!

Elfa Closet Sale!

By Tanya Whitford, CPO® on January 5, 2015 No Comments

January bTanya Whitford, CPO #5rings fresh starts, goals, resolutions- and the Elfa Closet Sale at The Container Store. I got an Elfa closet 9 years ago when I moved in with my then fiance and had to use the most ridiculous closet space for my clothes. The closet was very high and long with very little access to it aside from a tiny door. There was no way around it. I needed Elfa. We designed a double hang closet that accommodated the space and made it functional for me in a way I didn’t think possible.

A year later, we moved and that Elfa closet moved with me. In our house, the master closet was done, but my daughter’s room needed a better closet. With just the addition of 3 parts, my old closet was reconfigured and became my young daughter’s new closet. As she grows up, the low hanging bars and shelves will move upward. This closet will work the whole time she is growing up! Now that is a worthwhile purchase.

Once my father gave up trying to share a closet with my mom, he moved his clothes to the guest room closet. Only problem was, that closet had also turned into a kitchen pantry. I used Elfa to turn one closet into a clothes closet for my dad on one side- and a pantry with shelves on the other side. It created much more space in the closet and made it functional for its dual purpose.

I love Elfa for it’s ease and flexibility. You customize it to your space, budget, and tastes. Keep it simple and inexpensive with just the basics or go for everything from mesh drawers to jewelry trays.  There are usually 2 sales a year so try and time your closet purchase accordingly. Right now it is 30% off until February 11, 2015. Their designers are great. They can install it if you can’t. (It is pretty easy.) I love the way the catalog looks- but let’s be honest- no one’s closet has only 7 shirts and 6 pairs of shoes. I wish they would show what a real closet looks like with Elfa- so here is one =)

A Very Clever Crate

By Tanya Whitford, CPO® on November 10, 2014 No Comments

Ready to head out with the girls!

A few weeks ago, I was reading the LA Times Travel section when I saw a little blurb about a collapsible crate. I checked out the website and decided I had to try them. I like my reusable shopping bags, but I would like my own shopping baskets much more- especially ones that collapse when not in use.  I ordered 2 baskets and started using them the moment they arrived. They are only 15″ long by 10″ wide but they hold more than I expected. I use them every day now for multiple things. I love them! My kids love them! People who see me with them are impressed and ask where I got them.

Here is how I use them:

  • Shopping– in the grocery store for small loads, I get to use my basket from start to finish. A gallon of milk, 4 boxes of yogurt, and some fruits and vegetables all fit in my basket at my last visit to Trader Joes. The cashier thought the basket was cool. For big loads, I just have them collapsed in the cart for check-out.
  • Farmer’s Market– no need for any bags or worrying that my strawberries will get squished. All my fruits and vegetables fit perfectly.
  • Errands– library books, dry cleaning, merchandise returns, letters to be mailed. It all goes in a basket and then into my car for doing.
  • Kids– waters, snacks, sweaters, toys, books- it all fits in the basket. My daughters already know if they want to take it in the car- put it in the basket. When we are leaving the car- everything that came out of the basket goes back in it and we take it in the house.
  • Home– toys migrate to every room. We use the baskets to return toys to their correct home. When my older daughter cleans her room, she puts all her little sister’s toys in a basket to put back in the right room.

What fits inside with room for more!

Clever Crates also come in larger sizes (without handles) to use for your other storage needs. There are many sizes and colors to choose from. They are all portable and stackable. I have been using these for bigger jobs and they are great too!

I haven’t had these baskets long- and I wonder how I lived without them. There is something very comforting about having a place to easily put everything I need to remember for the next day. It is a portable launching pad. A convenient way to shop. An easy way to carry more than can fit in your hands. I bought two- and I need more. At $9.99 each- they are well worth it. I think I’ll be giving away a lot of these around the holidays!

Have Pencil Box. Will Travel.

By Tanya Whitford, CPO® on August 21, 2014 No Comments

IMG_3753Right before packing up for a long flight across the country, I did some school supply shopping. I can’t help it. Many of you would agree that some of these back to school sales are practically giving us coveted office supplies for free! How could you resist? At Target, I came across a soft plastic sliding pencil box for 69 cents (which is the regular price). This was not on my daughter’s classroom list, but I had a different use for them. The airplane.

I have tried keeping crayons in their boxes and putting them in Ziploc baggies. Neither method really works well for kids on an airplane tray table. But these pencil boxes that are light, bendable, and roomy inside are perfect! My daughters each filled their own pencil box with whatever drawing or writing objects they wanted. It went into their bags along with a blank sketch book, work books, and coloring books. On the plane, we pulled out the pencil boxes and removed the inside tray from the cover. You have to give it a little tug to get it out- but it works. You can just slide it open, but I thought pulling it all the way out was the better way to go. Then they each had a great box that easily showed their crayons and pencils without rolling off the tray table or into their laps. They loved them! Why didn’t I think of this before!

As I bent down to pick up the 3rd crayon that the child sitting in front of me dropped on the floor, I wished I had an extra pencil box to give to their parents =)

From Newlyweds to Expecting

By Tanya Whitford, CPO® on August 4, 2014 No Comments
built in shelves

Before- Newlywed Nook

By the time I celebrated my one year anniversary- I was 4 months pregnant. My life as a newlywed ended before we ever used most of the stuff we got for our wedding. I had so carefully utilized this wonderful built in bookshelf in our small apartment. It had all the things people joining their lives together might have- photo albums, yearbooks, CD collections, games, pictures, and liquor leftover from our wedding.

Once I was pregnant, a lot of things had to change. There was no room in our apartment for a nursery. The crib would have to be at the foot of our bed. The stroller would have to be in our living room.  And the wonderful built in shelves would have to become “the baby nook”.

In order to make room for baby, we had to deal with our own stuff. Yearbooks and never looked at photo albums were boxed up to store in the closet. Cds collections were wittled down. Liquor was given to friends. Things we no longer used were given away. It was a lot of work, but soon I had a blank canvas to create the baby nook!

Organizing Wonders Baby Nook

After- Baby Nook

What fun I had! I got an assortment of bins from Target, Lowes, and The Container Store to meet my needs.

  • I used big pull out cube drawers along the top row for things like sheets, extra toiletries, 6-9 month clothes and 12 month clothes.
  • Medium pull out drawers for towels and washcloths and breast pump supplies.
  • Bins for bibs & burp cloths, toys, teethers and blankets.
  • Small baskets for diapers & wipes and lotions & soaps.
  • Little drawers for grooming, hair accessories, medical necessities.
  • Shelf space for pregnancy books, picture books, diaper bags, slings, extra diapers, and wipes.

To complete the nook, we bought a white dresser from IKEA that was the perfect height and size for a changing table and we securely attached a baby changing pad to the top. The drawers were divided with IKEA Skubb boxes which are great inexpensive drawer organizers. I labeled them with things like “short sleeve onesies”, “long sleeve onesies”, and “pjs”.

The baby nook worked out really well. Everything was labeled making it easy for other people to help with the baby. My husband, who was new to the whole world of organizing, had to admit that this really made things a lot easier as we learned to be new parents. We have moved on to a bigger space and a bigger family, but that baby nook proved that small spaces can be highly efficient when properly organized.

Computer Cable Holders

By Tanya Whitford, CPO® on May 26, 2014 No Comments

IBefore have a lot of cables plugged into my laptop. When I want to grab it and work somewhere else, I have to unplug all the cables and hope none of them fall behind my desk. I tried one of these cable holders that I found at Target, but soon found that it didn’t always work. It was as if the cables move on their own sometimes and fly off the desk to hide from me. And it certainly didn’t hold any of the increasingly tiny USB Bluetooth inserts for mice, keyboards, and Fitbits that are very easy to lose track of.

Then I tried a MOS– Magnetic OrgMOSanization System. It is pretty nice. It forms a secure seal with your desk with suction- no need to install it. And things just stick to it like magic! OK. Like magnets! It is fun to drop your cables on it and have them stick so easily. They include 3 magnetic cable ties in case your cable is not magnetic. I don’t lose the cables anymore and all the tiny USB inserts have a place to stay put so I can always find them. I even throw my earrings on it! I kind of wish I had a big super strong MOS  that would work for keys and all the loose change my husband seems to leave everywhere =) For now I am very happy to have something that keeps my computer cables secure and right where I left them!

Little Space for Spices

By Tanya Whitford, CPO® on April 14, 2014 No Comments

cabinet organizerThe cabinet next to my stove is 5″ wide. At first I thought it would be perfect for spices. Then I tried to actually use it. There simply wasn’t enough room to maneuver. I would have to pull down many bottles to find what I was looking for. My first solution was using a Linus Packet Holder. It made it a little easier because I would pull out a bin that had all the spices, but I still had to rummage through bottles. I wanted to be able to see my spices, but with this method, I could still only see what was in the front. It was better than nothing, but I wanted more!

Then on a trip to Bed Bath & Beyond, I saw a spice rack that was just what I needed. It is called Swivel Store. (They don’t seem to carry it there anymore, but you can find it elsewhere online.) It was one of the “As Seen on TV” items which often seem to be good ideas, but don’t always work. It claimed to take up only 4″ of space so I thought I had finally found the solution to my tiny 5″ cabinet. They also had some small 99 cent spice jars there. I bought several knowing my big oversize Costco spices would never fit in this rack- or any rack for that matter.

side viewI tried it out and I have to say that it does really work for me. I filled up the spice jars with my most used spices and labeled them, putting the big spice bottles up and out of the way until refill time. My Trader Joes spices fit as they were. Now I can see 20 spices in the space that used to only show the 2-3 spices in the front. I love sliding the rack out and quickly grabbing what I need to cook. This made a very small and inconvenient cabinet a useful, organized, and maximized space.

You never know when you might find the perfect product to help your particular situation. Always make sure you measure the dimensions of your cabinets and spaces to ensure that things will fit!

A Handy Basket

By Tanya Whitford, CPO® on February 10, 2014 No Comments

IMG_1476The handled storage basket from the Container Store is one of my favorite products to use for many things. You would be surprised how handy a simple handle can be when you are trying to utilize space on cabinets above your head and below in cabinets. This picture illustrates how I use them for my daughter’s veggie and fruit pouches that she inhales daily. A quick pull from the cabinet so she can see what she wants and then back up they go. The pouches stay organized, easy to see, and easy to grab.

Here are some other uses for these handled storage baskets which come in both a small and large size.

  • All kinds of snacks from pouches to bars to cups stay nicely organized in these. Use one for each household member or each type of food product and line them up on the shelf.
  • Food that doesn’t like to stay put like bags of beans, pasta, and packets.
  • Bath and beauty products can stay corralled in these baskets and slip right under the sink.
  • Bath toys for the kids can be dumped in here. You can actually use the basket as a sieve to scoop up the toys after bath time and just let in drain in the empty tub. The holes come in handy!
  • Vitamins and medicines can be separated (Cold & flu, Indigestion, First Aid etc.) to help get that cabinet full of bottles under control. This is one area where labels on the baskets would be really helpful.
  • Office products like ink cartridges, post its, boxes of staples and paper clips, tape and bags of rubber bands are just a few of the office products you can store in these.
  • Craft supplies such as paints, glue guns and refills, and bags of cotton balls and popsicle sticks can be easily grabbed in a moment of inspirtaion. Keep supplies you commonly use together in the same basket.
  • Cords, cords, and more cords can be separated in these baskets and labeled so that when you are looking for your iPod accessories- you can find them and not hunt through a lot of other cords.
  • Little kid board books and small toys.

The possibilities are endless. When you need to get a handle on things up high and down low, these are some great and inexpensive baskets to try!
